Cape Kamenjak by Boat: A Guide to the Most Beautiful Bays of Southern Istria
Cape Kamenjak, located at the very south of the Istrian peninsula, is one of the most fascinating nature reserves on the Adriatic. Although popular with hikers and cyclists, the true experience of this wild landscape is provided exclusively from the sea side. The indented coastline, more than 30 kilometers long, hides more than 20 bays, numerous cliffs, and fascinating sea caves that are often inaccessible from land. Sailing around Kamenjak offers a freedom you cannot feel on the crowded roads inside the park – here it's just you, the crystal-clear sea, and the scent of Mediterranean herbs carried by the mistral wind.
Starting Points: Medulin or Pula?
The best way to explore Kamenjak is to rent a boat in Medulin or Pula. If you start from Medulin, the trip to the first bays of Kamenjak takes only 15-20 minutes of light driving. The Medulin archipelago, with its low sandy islands like Ceja and Levan, serves as a perfect overture to the rougher beauty of the cape. On the other hand, departing from Pula offers the opportunity to see historical fortresses and pass along Verudela before the endless blue opens up towards the open sea. Regardless of the starting point, it is crucial to follow the weather forecast, as southern winds can create quite large waves here.

The Most Beautiful Bays for Anchoring
One of the safest and most beautiful bays for anchoring is Portić Bay. It is deeply recessed into the land and provides excellent protection from most winds. Here the sea is calm, and the bottom is sandy, giving it that recognizable light blue color. For those seeking more excitement, Kolumbarica Bay at the very tip of the cape is an unavoidable stop. It is known for its high cliffs from which the bravest visitors jump, and for its sea caves that you can enter by boat or swim into. The interior of the caves offers an incredible play of light and shadow, and the sea is so clear that you can see every detail on the bottom.
Sea Adventure in the Caves
Velika Kolumbarica Cave is the most famous, but there are also several smaller, more hidden passages that you can discover only if you have your own boat and enough time to explore. Snorkeling here is mandatory. The underwater world of Kamenjak is rich in fish, sea spiders, and it's not uncommon to see the Mediterranean monk seal in these clean waters, although she is extremely shy. After exploring the caves, we recommend sailing towards the islet of Porer, where one of the most beautiful lighthouses on the Adriatic is located. Currents around Porer are extremely strong, so it is recommended only for experienced sailors or a visit at a safe distance.

Tips for a Perfect Day at Sea
To make the most of your day, start early in the morning. Most tourist boats arrive around noon, so you will spend the morning hours in relative peace. Bring enough water and food, although on Kamenjak itself there is the cult Safari bar which is definitely worth a visit – you can reach it after anchoring your boat in a nearby bay. Also, don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses, as the sun's reflection from the white rocks of Kamenjak is extremely strong. Cape Kamenjak is a protected area, so be responsible, don't leave trash, and respect the nature that surrounds you.
