Blue Cave and Pakleni Islands: How to Best Plan a Trip from Split

A day trip that includes a visit to the Blue Cave on the island of Biševo and the Pakleni Islands in front of Hvar is an absolute 'must-do' for every sailor visiting Split. This route covers some of the most beautiful natural phenomena on the Adriatic, but due to its popularity, it requires careful planning. The distance from Split to Biševo is about 35 nautical miles, which means that a fast and reliable boat is needed for this trip. Whether you rent a boat with a skipper or manage it yourself, the key to success is an early departure and good knowledge of the logistics surrounding entering the cave itself.

Blue Cave: The Secret of Perfect Timing

The Blue Cave is most beautiful between 10:30 and 12:30, when the sun's rays fall at a precisely determined angle through an underwater opening, creating that unreal, sparkling blue glow. However, that's also when the crowds are largest. We recommend that you arrive at Mežupurat Bay on Biševo as early as 9:00 to buy a ticket and get in line. Entrance to the cave itself is exclusively in small official boats. While waiting in line, you can anchor nearby or have coffee at a local bar. It is important to know that the cave can be closed for visits if a strong south wind (jugo) is blowing, even if it is sunny, due to waves that prevent safe entry through the low opening.

Break on Vis: Komiža or Stiniva Bay

After Biševo, the logical continuation is the island of Vis. You can visit Komiža, a charming fishing village with a rich history, or sail towards the south side of the island to the famous Stiniva Bay. Stiniva, with its narrow passage between high cliffs, is a breathtaking sight. Keep in mind that the bay is often crowded with boats, so it is best to stay briefly for swimming and taking photos. If you are looking for a quieter place, Pritišćina Bay is a small but beautiful alternative nearby. Vis also offers numerous military tunnels that you can see from the sea, adding a dose of adventurism to your trip.

Pakleni Islands: Where to Drop Anchor?

The Pakleni Islands are the perfect final stop before returning to Split. This archipelago of about 20 islets and cliffs offers many options. For those wanting fun and luxurious beach bars, Vinogradišće Bay (Palmižana) is the right place. But if you are looking for turquoise sea and peace, sail towards the islet of Klement or the bays on the islet of Marinkovac. Ždrilca and Mlini bays offer crystal clear sea and excellent restaurants. The Pakleni Islands are well protected from most winds, so it is an ideal place to relax at anchor before heading on the 25 nautical mile long journey back to Split.

Equipment and Safety Tips

This trip involves crossing the open sea (Hvar and Vis channels), where the weather can change quickly. Ensure that you have all the necessary safety equipment, enough fuel, and a charged mobile phone on the boat. If you are not an experienced sailor, we highly recommend renting a boat with a skipper – he not only takes care of safety but also knows hidden bays and knows exactly when to be at which place to avoid the worst crowds. Don't forget to bring a snorkeling mask, as the underwater world around Vis and Biševo is incredibly rich and clear.
