Boat Equipment: What Must You Bring for a Full-Day Sail?

Planning a full-day boat trip is an exciting experience, but forgetting key items can quickly spoil the fun. Whether you're renting a small speedboat or a large yacht, adequate preparation is key to safety and comfort. Here is our guide to the mandatory equipment you should have with you.

Sun Protection – Your Number 1 Priority

At sea, the sun is significantly stronger due to reflection from the water surface. Even if there is a pleasant breeze, sunburn occurs faster than on land. Be sure to bring sunscreen with SPF 50, high-quality sunglasses with polarized lenses, and a hat that stays firmly on your head (or has a strap). UV protection shirts (rash guards) are also a great idea, especially for children.

Hydration and Food

Dehydration is a common problem at sea. Bring at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water per person. Avoid too much alcohol during the sail as it accelerates dehydration and reduces reflexes, which is dangerous for the person steering the boat. Regarding food, choose light meals – fruit, sandwiches, or nuts. A portable cooler with plenty of ice is essential.

Technical Equipment and Communication

Although most modern boats have GPS plotters, your smartphone is a key tool. Make sure you have apps with marine charts (like Navionics) and the weather forecast installed. A power bank is mandatory because GPS and constant photography drain the battery quickly. Also, a waterproof bag (dry bag) will protect your valuables from sea spray.

Safety First

Before setting sail, check where the life jackets are located on the boat and if they are in appropriate sizes for all passengers. A first aid kit should contain plasters, disinfectant, and sea sickness medication, even if you think you don't need them.
