Nautical Weekend on the Opatija Riviera: From Volosko to Lovran

The Opatija Riviera, the cradle of Croatian tourism, provides a completely different perspective when viewed from the sea side. While the Lungomare winds along the coast connecting aristocratic buildings, sailors enjoy the peace and the view of Mount Učka, which descends steeply towards the crystal-clear Kvarner. A nautical weekend in this area is ideal for those looking for a blend of luxury, history, and untouched nature. Sailing from the small fishing village of Volosko to the medieval Lovran is a short route but filled with numerous interesting sights, top gastronomy, and hidden swimming spots that are often inaccessible to pedestrians.

Volosko: The Start of a Gastro-Nautical Story

Your adventure can begin in the small harbor of Volosko. Although the harbor is cramped and intended primarily for smaller boats, it exudes indescribable charm. Volosko is known as the gastronomic center of the region, with some of the best fish restaurants in the entire Adriatic. Anchor in front of the harbor and go for a short walk through the stone streets before sailing south. As you sail towards Opatija, you will pass by the Angiolina Castle and the Girl with a Seagull statue – the city's symbol, which looks even more impressive from the sea. Here the sea currents are light, and the view of 'fabulous Opatija' from its grand Art Nouveau style hotels is breathtaking.

Anchoring at Ičići and Ika Bay

After the bustle of Opatija, sail towards Ičići, where a large ACI marina is located if you need full service. However, for a day rest, we recommend anchoring near the town of Ika. This small bay offers crystal sea and a calmer environment. Ika is known for its underwater freshwater springs (vruje) that make the sea somewhat colder, but extremely clean and refreshing. It is an ideal place to drop anchor and enjoy the afternoon sun with a glass of local Malvasia. The bottom here is a mixture of sand and rocks, so check if the anchor holds well before jumping into the sea.

Lovran: A Medieval Gem for the End

End your sailing in Lovran, a city with a thousand-year history and a recognizable old town center. The Lovran harbor is small and picturesque, protected by a breakwater dating from the time of Austria-Hungary. Use the time to tour the old town, its narrow streets, and high stone houses. Lovran is known for maruni (sweet chestnuts) and asparagus, so depending on the season, be sure to taste the local specialties. For staying overnight on the boat, if the weather allows and there is no announcement of bura (north-eastern wind), you can stay at anchor in front of Lovran and enjoy the view of the illuminated riviera and the lights of Rijeka in the distance.

Nautical Tips for Kvarner

Kvarner Bay is beautiful, but it can be fickle. The bura is the most dangerous wind here and can blow suddenly, descending down the slopes of Učka. Always check the Aladin forecast or local radio stations. During the summer months, the mistral is pleasant and makes sailing easier, but in the early afternoon, it can strengthen, which should be taken into account if you have a smaller boat or RIB. Also, respect the distance of 300 meters from the coast when gliding to protect swimmers who enjoy the many rocky beaches of this beautiful riviera.
