Hidden Gems of the Šibenik Archipelago: The Islands of Kaprije and Žirje

While most tourists rush towards the Kornati or the Krka waterfalls, true connoisseurs of the Šibenik archipelago turn their helm towards Kaprije and Žirje. These islands have managed to retain that primordial spirit of Dalmatia – without mass tourism, with crystal-clear seas and hospitable hosts. If you are looking for peace and authenticity, this is the route for you.

Kaprije – The Car-Free Island

Kaprije was named after the Mediterranean plant caper, which grows here in abundance. What makes this island special is the complete absence of cars. The entire island is a pedestrian zone, creating an incredibly relaxing atmosphere. The main harbor of Kaprije is protected from most winds, and St. Peter's Bay offers excellent anchorages and top-quality taverns serving fish caught that same morning.

Žirje – History on the High Seas

Žirje is the most distant inhabited island in the Šibenik archipelago. Due to its strategic position, the island has been an important fortress throughout history, as evidenced by the remains of 6th-century Byzantine fortifications that are definitely worth a visit for the panoramic view. Today, Žirje is an oasis of peace. Its coastline is indented with numerous coves like Koromašna and Stupica, ideal for all-day swimming and diving in the deep, clear blue.

Why Visit Both Islands in One Day?

Although different, Kaprije and Žirje complement each other perfectly. You can start the day by swimming in a turquoise bay on an uninhabited part of Žirje, and then head to Kaprije for lunch and a walk through the stone streets of the village. This route allows you to feel the true pulse of Adriatic island life, far from the hustle and bustle of modern resorts.
